Environment > Archaeology

A full Archaeological and Cultural Heritage Assessment was carried out to determine if there are any areas of archaeological importance within the site.

The assessment found that there are three main archaeological features to the site (none of these are officially protected)

  • There are two areas showing evidence of Late Bronze Age activity which may include pottery, flint and animal bones. This area is assessed as of ‘medium importance’.
  • There are remains of a Roman stock enclosure in another area, which may include historical artefacts as well as the bones of sheep, goats, pigs and cattle. This area is assessed as of ‘medium importance’.
  • Thirdly, there is evidence of a Roman field system which is made up of shallow ditches and does not appear to include any artefacts. This area is assessed as of ‘low importance’.

Some of these artefacts may need to be removed prior to the development of the site. In the areas of Late Bronze Age activity, archaeological features may have to be excavated by hand. Where archaeological features can be found in areas that are planned to be public space, care will be taken to make sure that the planting of trees and other plants used to landscape the areas do not have any negative impacts on the features.

We will aim to preserve or record all the archaeological features through hand excavation, and recording processes where recommended.
