By including a school, local shops and community facilities within NorthBridge, we aim to reduce the amount of traffic generated by the development by encouraging sustainable transport use (i.e. walking, cycle, bus and rail transport). The main signalised access has been designed to provide bus priority thereby allowing buses to move freely and ensuring a reliable and attractive service.
There will be a main spine road providing easy access through to the centre of NorthBridge: the main bus route will also be along the spine road. The development layout will restrict vehicle speeds to 20 mph, with even lower speeds on the smaller, village lanes. Traffic calming systems will be used wherever appropriate.
Cyclists and pedestrians will be given priority within NorthBridge. The green corridors will provide cyclists with a more scenic way to travel around. Footpaths around the development (many within green corridors) will make it easy to get around on foot, and the provision of off-street parking will minimise the risk of cars blocking the pavements. The footbridge will link internal foot and cycle paths to those in the wider Huntingdon area.
There will be a number of ways for residents to park their vehicles safely within NorthBridge, including courtyard parking, private garages and on-plot, private parking. On-street or informal parking will be allowed only in areas where roads have been widened or where parking may reduce traffic speed to the advantage of the residents. Predominantly, on-street parking will be discouraged.
